Overview of Fuchsia

• Fuchsia triphylla, was discovered on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola.
• This is the first species discovered by Charles Plumier in 1696-1697.
• Known species of Fuchsia are approximately 110.
• South Africa is home to the maximum variety.
• Few of them are found through Central America to Mexico, and also several from New Zealand to Tahiti.
• Majority are tropical or subtropical.
• Most fuchsias are shrubs.
• They grow up to a height of 0.2–4 m (8 in–13 ft 1 in).
• One of the New Zealand species named Kotukutuku (Fuchsia excorticata) grows up to 12–15 meters (39–49 ft) tall.
• Fuchsia leaves are opposite or in whorls.
• They are 3–5, simple and lanceolate.
• They have serrated margins.
• They are 1–25 cm long.
• They are either deciduous or evergreen.
• The flowers are very decorative.
• Sepals are bright red and the petals purple.
• The colors can vary from white to dark red, purple-blue, and orange.

Growing/Caring conditions for Fuchsia

• Fuchsias once planted can live for years.
• It does not require enough care.
• They flower each year by July.
• They will often perform well in other favorable climatic zones.
• In somewhat colder regions they die back and re-shoot from below ground in the spring.
• This plant requires Full sun to partial shade.
• The soil pH should be acidic that is less than 6.8.
• It likes dry soils to moderate moisture.
• The soil can be rocky or sandy.
• The plant is propagated by seed.
• Sow the seed in fall or spring.
• Stratify the seeds for ten weeks at 40 degrees.
• Plant the seedlings.
• Space the plants to 18 to 24 inches.
• The hairs of the plants can spread through winds.

Caring for Fuchsia

• This plant requires Full sun to partial shade.
• It likes dry soils to moderate moisture.
• The soil can be rocky or sandy.

• Asters are resistant to insects and disease.
