Overview of Trigonella Emodi or Himalayan Fenugreek

• Himalayan fenugreek is a perennial herb.
• It is about 20-60 cm that is found on ravine shores or meadow by woods of the Himalayan valleys.
• The herb has its stem erect or ascending, terete, branching at base, yellow pubescent when young.
• The leaves are divided into 3 broadly obovate leaflets.
• Leaflet base is wedge-shaped and margins are sparsely serrated.
• Flowers are 5-8 in short racemes.
• The stalk carrying the raceme is slender and axillary which is about 1-2 cm.
• Flowers are yellow in color.
• Flowers are 6-9 mm.
• June-August is the flowering period of this herb.

Growing/Caring conditions of Trigonella Emodi or Himalayan Fenugreek

• Prepare a planting area in mid spring in a protected, sunny area.
• The plant likes good amount of heat from sun for it grow right.
• Trigonella likes it hot and so choose a location beside your house or garage where the sun shines every day.
• Spread a 2-inch layer of organic compost on top of the soil.
• This will help to fertilize the soil and aid in the help of growth of plant.
• Turn it under to a depth of about 8 inches.
• Rake the area level, and make a shallow trench with your hoe.
• This hoe should be about 1/2 inch deep.
• Plant seeds directly into the garden.
• Space them about 4 inches apart in the trench that is created.
• Cover with a scant 1/4 inch of your soil and compost mixture.
• Water the planting area with a sprinkler for about 10 minutes.
• This is necessary for the germination of the seeds that have been planted.
• Keeps the soil moist until you see green sprouts emerging from the soil.
• Water only when the soil is dry later.
• Allow the plants to form seedpods.
• This typically occurs in late summer or fall.
• Wait until seedpods turn yellow before you harvest them.
• Dry the seedpods in a sunny location for about one week.
• Cover them at night if you expect rain or fog.
• Break open the pods to extract the seeds.
• Store them in an airtight jar or plastic bag.
• This way they will remain dry.
