Adonis annua which is also known as Pheasant’s-eye, Adonis’ Flower, Autumn Adonis, Autumn Pheasant’s-eye, Blood drops, Flos Adonis, Red Chamomile, Red Morocco, Rose-a-ruby, Soldiers-in-green is a flowering plant that belongs to the family Ranunculaceae (Buttercup family). This is an annual plant and over 20-40 species of Adonis are known.

It is also a medicinal and ornamental plant. This plant is native to North Africa, West Asia and Europe. This flowering plant can grow up to a height of 10 inches. The flowers are scarlet in color. The base of the flower has darker spots. This plant has the name Bird’s Eye due to the bird’s-eye primrose. The name pheasant’s-eye is named after the poet’s narcissus. The name Adonis refers to the Greek God in Greek mythology.

These species have finely divided leaves and are feathery in appearance. The flowers are red and have about 5-30 sepals. They bloom in midsummer. The foliage is herbaceous. They are found in habitats of Alpines and Rock Gardens. These are used in gardens mostly.

Growing/Caring conditions for Adonis annua:
– This plant should be spaced about 6-9 in. (15-22 cm) to 9-12 in. (22-30 cm) apart.
– They grow best in the USDA Zones 3-7.
– This plant needs full sun to partial shade to grow well.
– The soil should be humus rich.
– The plant has average water needs.
– Water regularly but do not overwater the plant.
– The soil pH requirements are 6.6 to 7.5 (neutral), 7.6 to 7.8 (mildly alkaline) to 7.9 to 8.5 (alkaline).
– The plant needs to be grown in an area with well draining.
– Add leaf mold or compost mixed in the soil where the planting is done.
– The temperatures as low as -31 degrees Fahrenheit should be maintained for the plant to grow healthy.
– Fertilize the plant at least once in a month for better blooming and the fertilizer needs to have minimal amounts of nitrogen.
– The soil needs to be moist for proper growth of the plant.
– Divide this plant after two years.
– Divide only when the plant has finished flowering.
– Sprinkle small amounts of lime into the fertilizer for prolonged growth of the plant.
– These are clump-forming perennials and can be divided for propagation during their dormancy in summer.
