Acai Palm is a species of Palm tree – growing up to a height of 15-30 meters or 90 feet

The acai palm (Euterpe oleracea) belongs to the genus Eutrepe and is a species of palm tree. This plant is cultivated for its fruit. The name comes from the word “Tupian” meaning “the fruit that cries or expels water.” These species are about eight and all are native of Central and South America, from Belize southward to Brazil and Peru, and found mainly in swamps and floodplains.

These are palms and hence can grow up to a height of 15-30 meters or 90 feet. These are tall and slender and the leaves are pinnate that are about 3 meters in length. The leaves are like other palm trees. They are long and slender.
The fruit is major component of this tree and it is large and black-purple in color and appears in clusters several times in a year.

It has antioxidants and paired with berries. The fruit is about 1 inch (25 mm) in circumference and looks like a grape. The clusters are in 500-900 fruits. The seed is large and inside the fruit is about 0.25–0.40 inches (7–10 mm) in diameter. The fruit is used in tablets, juice, smoothies, yogurt, instant drink powders, and as a whole fruit.

It is used medically to treat diabetes and other chronic illnesses. Its fruit is used as food or a flavoring in tequila. The leaves are used as Leaves may be made into hats, mats, baskets, brooms and roof thatch for homes, and trunk wood, resistant to pests, for building construction. The trunks also are used for construction. The juice is used for its antioxidant property.

Growing/Caring conditions for Açaí palm
– The Acai palm seeds are first soaked in warm water.
– Soak them to about two days to soften the outer layer of the seed and to quicken the germination process.
– First drench the soil with water where the seeds need to be sown.
– Sow the seeds and cover with a sheet on top to retain moisture.
– Provide the location such that there is filtered sunlight every day and it is protected from wind.
– The soil pH should be between 6 and 6.5.
– Provide the soil with organic compost and fertilizer.
– Keep the soil moist.
– Avoid overwatering the plant.
– See that the temperature should not drop below 45 degrees.
