Butterfly Monarda ‘Bergamo Bouquet’ – Monarda hybrida

Butterfly Monarda is an annual, open pollinated and diploid plant which is also known as Bee balm or Bergamot. It can grow up to a height of 18-24 inches and spread wide about 2-18 inches. This annual bears flowers that are of lilac and rosy-purple combination. They bloom from June to August and repeat blooming once the old flowers are deadheaded. It is a native of America. The flower heads are unique with tubular flowers in large numbers in one flower that grow from the centre point. This appears like a dome of petals. The foliage is aromatic along with the flowers. This annual attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. It is used as a border plant, cut flower for decorations, bedding plant and for landscaping. They are also used in mass plantings and edgings in rock gardens, meadow settings and in prairie lawns. The leaves are lanceolate and green.
This plant needs full sun to partial shade. The plant needs moist and well drained soil. It grows well in temperatures of 14-18 degrees Centigrade. This plant is a little resistant to mildew but care has to be taken that the foliage receives enough sun and air and hence spacing should be done right to avoid mildew disease for the plant.

Growing conditions of Butterfly Monarda ‘Bergamo Bouquet’

• This plant needs full sun to partial shade.
• The plant needs moist and well drained soil.
• Transplant the root cutting directly.
• Sow the seeds on the surface and cover lightly with soil.
• Direct sow the seeds at 16 -18°C.
• Sow the seeds in April-May in dry and cool conditions.
• Grow at 14 – 18°C.
• Start about 8 to 10 weeks after the seeds germinate.
• Seeds have to germinate and once done, plant them outside after the danger of frost passed.
• This plant needs fertile and rich soil.
• Space the plants 18 inches apart.
• Add compost and manure to enhance growth.
• Water regularly as the plant prefers moist soil.
• It needs full sun to partial shade.
• Use a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer in spring every year.
• Add layer of mulch of 1-2 inches around the plant to conserve moisture.

Care for Butterfly Monarda ‘Bergamo Bouquet’

• Cut the plant to ground level in autumn.
• Cut the plant to several inches close to soil after flowering to encourage new growth and heavy blooming the next season.
• Mulch well with bark to retain moisture.
• The growth will start back in spring.
• The plant needs care for powdery mildew. Cut back the stems if affected by it.
• Space the plants right to avoid mildew disease.
