Butterfly pea vine – Clitoria ternateas, belongs to Fabaceae family




Butterfly pea vine also known as Clitoria ternatea belongs to Fabaceae family. This plant is a herbaceous perennial that can grow up to a height of 4-6 ft. (1.2-1.8 m). This plant is an Annual, Tropical and Tender Vine and a Climber. This perennial is a native of tropical equatorial Asia and led to Africa, Australia and the New World. This plant has elliptical and obtuse leaves. The plants bears vivid blue to purple flowers will solitary light yellow markings which are 4 cm long and 3 cm wide. They bloom from mid to late Summer The plants has fruits that are 5-7 cm in length and have flat pods with 6-10 seeds in every pod. This plant has smooth textured and evergreen foliage. This plant needs to ensure a support that is strong enough to support its stem and the climb such as a trellis or a wall.
This plant is used as an ornamental plant and as a vegetation species. It is grown on a lattice, a trellis, arbors and chain-link fences. It is a nitrogen fixing plant. These flowers are used to color food, cooking, as food and for frying in some areas of south East Asia.
It has an anisotropic, anxiolytic, antidepressant, anticonvulsant and antistress activity. It has Tannins, resins, Starch, Taraxerol & Taraxerone in it. It can cure whooping cough and cure goiter and is an ayurveda Indian medicine. It is also known to treat infertility and gonorrhea, control menstrual discharge and as an aphrodisiac.
This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and birds. These plants grow in hardiness Zones 10-11. These perennials need full sun to partial shade. The Soil pH requirements are 6.6 to 7.5 (neutral).
