Black Eyed Susan Vine – Thunbergia alata, a climber




Black Eyed Susan is a vine and climber which is a perennial. This tender vine can grow up to a height of 6-8 ft. (1.8-2.4 m). It acts as an annual and is native to tropical regions of Africa, Madagascar, and Asia. They have flowers ranging from Red, Orange, Red-Orange and Bright Yellow which are 1.5 inch wide. They bloom in Late Spring/Early Summer to Mid Summer to Late Summer/Early Fall. The flowers are five-petaled and has a brownish purple centre which appears like the eye and hence the name black eye. As an annual, it can grow up to a height of 8 feet and as a perennial; it can grow up to a height of 20 feet. The five lobed flowers have tubes that open to form a trumpet shape. This vine has evergreen foliage.
This plant can be used as a ground cover, on a trellis or window box and in hanging baskets. They need to be provided with moist and well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Its Soil pH requirements are 6.1 to 6.5 (mildly acidic), 6.6 to 7.5 (neutral), and 7.6 to 7.8 (mildly alkaline). By maintaining the temperature above 60 degrees, the flower will bloom all year.

Growing Conditions for Black eye Susan vine

• This plant needs moist soil and well drained soil.
• This plant needs full sun to partial shade.
• This plant grows in Hardiness zones of 10 and higher.
• Sow the seeds six to eight weeks before the final frost of the year.
• Sow the seed 1/8 inch deep and with a spacing of 6 inches.
• Use chalky/loamy soil mixed with moss or sand to ensure a well-drained soil.
• The Soil pH requirements are 6.1 to 6.5 (mildly acidic), 6.6 to 7.5 (neutral), and 7.6 to 7.8 (mildly alkaline).
• The soil should be moist and warm with a temperature of 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
• Provide the area with a support like a trellis or wall with full sun to partial shade.
• Transplant the vines once the seedlings emerge.
• The plant will take about 15-20 days to emerge.
• Water about one inch, once a week.
• The plant spacing should be 24-36 in. (60-90 cm).

Care for Black Eye Susan vine

• It grows best in Hardiness zones of 10 and higher.
• Do not overwater, just keep the soil moist.
• These vines are prone to spider mite and whitefly infestations and scale infections, so keep a check on them.
