Butterfly Bush – Black Knight – Buddleia davidii ‘Black Knight’




This butterfly bush “Black Knight” is a deciduous shrub and a herbaceous perennial belonging to the family Scrophulariaceae. It is also known as Buddleia davidii ‘Black Knight’. This shrub can grow up to a height of 6-8 feet and can spread wide about 3-5 feet. This shrub has long, star-like blossoms which bloom from June to September that is from summer through fall. The blooms are in very dark purple color to almost black and hence black knight. The foliage is dark green to willowy gray-green and lance shaped which is pointed up to 10″ long. The flowers appear to be Lilac-like with spikes up to 4-10″ long at branch tips only. It has arching and spreading habit. If not provided full sun, the shrub becomes weedy and sparse with minimized flowering.
This shrub attracts hundreds of butterflies and humming birds along with many other beneficial insects with its honey-scented blooms and sweet nectar. There are used as a patio plant or massed plantings in borders, cottage gardens, rose gardens or butterfly gardens and in landscaping. It is also used as a cut flower. This shrub needs full sun to partial shade and can grow in zones of 5 to 9. It needs light, chalky, sandy soils and tolerates dry soil. But it needs well-drained soil. It’s best to prune back almost to ground in early spring or late winter before it begins to grow each year. Remove the spent flower spikes for additional bloom.

Growing conditions for Butterfly bush royal red

• This shrub needs full sun to partial shade.
• It grows in zones of 5 to 9.
• It needs light, chalky, sandy soils and tolerates dry soil.
• It needs well-drained soil.
• Sow the seeds about three weeks before the last expected frost in the spring.
• Use sand, vermiculite and perlite in equal ratios.
• Pour the above mixture in a pot up to 75%.
• Water the seeds well.
• Keep the soil moist.
• Sow the seeds in this pot and press gently.
• Do not cover the seed as light is required for the seed to germinate.
• Keep the pot in full sun.
• Maintain the temperature to 70 degrees F.
• Daily water the pot.
• It takes about two weeks to germinate.
• Once the seedlings are about 3-4 inches tall, Transplant them.
• Once the threat of frost is over, transplant them.
• These shrubs can also be propagated from Semi-hardwood cuttings.

• Cut back all flowering stems close to the base in early spring.

• It is a Deer resistant shrub.
• Nematodes can be troublesome in the South.
