Red & Orange (A. tuberose) – Asclepias tuberosa




Asclepias tuberosa is a perennial plant that grows up to a height of 0.3-1metres (1-3 feet). It is a species of Milkweed and belongs to the family Asclepiadaceae, which is also known as Butterfly Weed, Canada Root, Chigger Flower, Chiggerflower, Fluxroot, Indian Paintbrush, Indian Posy, Orange Milkweed, Orange Swallow-wort, Pleurisy Root, Silky Swallow-wort, Tuber Root, Yellow Milkweed, White-root, Windroot. It is a native to Eastern North America. The flowers are orange or yellow which are in clusters. They are borne on the top of 2′-3′ stems. They bloom from early summer to early fall (June-September). The leaves are laceolate and spirally arranged and can grow up to a length of 5-12cm and 2-3cm broad. The foliage is dark and the root system is tap root. This plant can be easily propagated in water.
This plant attracts butterflies because of copious nectar and its color. It is also food for Queen and Monarch butterflies. This plant needs gravel sandy and dry soil that is well drained soil. This plant needs full sun to grow well. This plant grows well in hardiness zone of 3-9. This plant has medicinal and herbal qualities and was used by Native Americans. It could be used as an herb for contra-indicated pregnancy and as an expectorant for wet coughs.
This plant is identified by its flowers that are large in numbers and stems that are hairy and when broken, a milky liquid flows out of it.
The other subspecies known are Asclepias tuberosa interior (Central United States), Asclepias tuberosa rolfsii – Rolfs Milkweed (Southeastern United States) and Asclepias tuberosa tuberosa (Eastern United States). It is used as a cut flower, dried flower arrangements, border plants and for landscaping.

Growing conditions for Butterfly Weed plant

• This plant needs gravel sandy and dry soil that is well drained soil.

• Transplant in a suitable location for long tap rooted plants.
• Sow the seeds in spring or two months before the first frost.

• Plant them 8-12 inches apart in full sun.
