Asclepias incarnata ‘Ice Ballet’ – a bright white swamp milkweed




Ice ballet is a bright white swamp milkweed and hence known as White Swamp Milkweed or Butterfly weed. Ice ballet milkweed is a lower-growing herbaceous perennial which can grow up to a height of three feet and can spread up to 32 inches. It can live up to ten years approximately. It has clear white or snow white flowers which are lightly scented and the foliage is dark green in color. The leaves are narrow and grayish-green in color. It is a native of North America. The flowers bloom in dry summer months. They last till fall. This plant has strong stems. Ice ballet grows well in full sun to partial shade and needs moist and well drained soil. The plant grows well in hardiness zone of 4a or 3-9.
Ice ballet milkweed attracts humming birds and butterflies especially Monarch butterflies because of its nectar. It also attracts deer. This plant is used as a border plant, as a cut flower and as tall ground cover and in butterfly gardens. It is used in mass plantings and in dried flower arrangements. It is also used in Naturalizing and Woodland Gardens and Bog gardens. It is known to be the only plant where Monarch butterflies lay their eggs.
This plant is also known for its medicinal properties. This plant is supposedly known to have anodyne properties. Its root and rhizome are used in powder form mostly to treat cases of asthma and typhus fever with catarrh and in giving relief to cough and pain.

Growing conditions of Ice ballet Milkweed

• Ice ballet grows well in full sun to partial shade.
• This plant needs moist and well drained soil.
• The plant grows well in hardiness zone of 4a or 3-9.

From stem cuttings
• The plant is propagated by stem cutting.
• Cut the stem ¼ inch below the leaf node and at an angle.
• The length of the cutting should be at least three to six inches.
• Dip the cutting in Root one powder, hormone powder.
• Firm the soil around the cutting.
• Keep the cutting well ventilated, to avoid disease.
• Water timely and do not overwater.

From seeds:
• The seeds need to be stratified.
• Once the seedlings emerge, plant the seedlings.
• Keep them in full sun to partial shade.
