Hairy Golden – Aster – Chrysopsis villosa (means hairy in Latin)




Hairy Golden aster belongs to the Genus- Chrysopsis and Species- Villosa which means hairy in Latin. Chrysopsis mariana is its scientific name. It is a hairy perennial which can grow up to a height of 0.10-0.50m, 24-36 in. (60-90 cm). It has yellow flower heads which are in branched clusters. The flower is about one inch wide. The seed heads have white bristles. They have strong sage-like aroma. This plant is a native of North America. The stems are erect and the leaves are hairy and in dull green color. The leaves are half to 11/4 inches long and are lance-shaped. They are found in California, Canada to west central and western United States.
The stems are silky and have purple stain. The leaves are woolly and grow to be smooth. The flowers bloom late in summer to fall. The foliage is woody and deciduous and Herbaceous, Silver/Gray, Velvet/Fuzzy-Textured. This plant need full sun to partial shade. They do well in hot weather. The plant is drought-resistant and grows well in sandy or well-drained soils. The golden aster is used as border plants, in autumn gardens, rock gardens and for landscaping. Almost five of the varieties are known. They are used for display purposes. This plant is attractive to butterflies, bees and birds.

Growing conditions for Golden Aster

• This plant can be propagated by division and from seed.
• Sow the seeds outdoors in fall.
• If sowing in winter, sow in vented containers, cold frame or unheated greenhouse.
• Stratify before sowing indoors.
• Sow the seeds before last frost.
• Spacing between the plants should be 12-15 in. (30-38 cm).
• This plant need full sun to partial shade.
• This plant grows in hardiness of USDA 3-10.
• It has average water needs.
• The plant is drought-resistant and grows well in sandy or well-drained soils.
• The Soil pH requirements are 6.1 to 6.5 (mildly acidic), 6.6 to 7.5 (neutral), 7.6 to 7.8 (mildly alkaline), and 7.9 to 8.5 (alkaline).

• Use well-drained soil to enhance good growth.
• The plant is drought-resistant and grows well in sandy soils.
• The Soil pH requirements are 6.1 to 6.5 (mildly acidic), 6.6 to 7.5 (neutral), 7.6 to 7.8 (mildly alkaline), and 7.9 to 8.5 (alkaline).
• Do not overwater the plants as this can cause death of the plant.
• Deadhead the seeds and remove them to avoid the plant to become invasive as it self sows freely.
