Duchess of Albany- Clematis texensis – a perennial




Its botanical name is Clematis texensis ‘Duchess of Albany’ and is also known by the names Scarlet clematis; Clematis texensis group ‘Duchess of Albany’. Its genus is Clematis. It is a self-clinging semi herbaceous perennial. It is a climber that is fast growing. It has mid-green leaves which are oval in shape. It flowers are bright pink and attractive and bell shaped flowers the shades of the borders of the flowers are lilac-pink. They bloom from summer to early autumn that is July to September. The seed heads are silky which are persistent in autumn and winter. The Clematis texensis ‘Duchess of Albany’ is Deciduous. The colour of the flowers remains same in autumn and summer and that is pink. The plant has Green foliage and can spread up to one meter. This plant can be used as a wall plants as it’s a climber. The height of the plant can grow up to three meters. It is a native of South and West.
It grows in a soil of pH which is Acid, Alkaline or Neutral. This climber needs exposure to full sun, partial shade. It grows in hardy zones and needs a well-drained and chalky/alkaline and dry soil. It has been given the Royal Horticultural Society’s prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM). This climber can be pruned by cutting the stems to 15-20cm (6-8in) above ground level before growth, that is, in early spring. It can be cut back in February to March.

Growing Conditions of Clematis texensis

• This climber grows well in full sun.
• It needs moist and humus rich soil.
• It needs fertile and well drained soil.
• It grows in a soil of pH which is Acid, Alkaline or Neutral.
• It grows in Hardy zones.
• During planting Space the plants to 24″-36″ apart.
• Clematis will bloom in the spring to early fall.
• A trellis, fencing or posts are required as this is a vine and needs support.
• Since the roots are shallow it needs to be shaded by growing other flowers around the base of the vine.
• Keep the soil moist, but not wet.

Caring for Duchess of Albany

• This climber grows well in full sun.
• It needs moist and humus rich soil.
• It needs fertile and well drained soil.
• The use of mulch should be avoided as Clematis can suffer from wilt and fungus diseases present in decomposing mulch.
• Add an all purpose fertilizer once a month.
• Clematis is rarely affected by insect problems.
• Use an insecticide as needed.
• Use fungicides if plant wilts and fungus disease occurs.
• Keep the soil moist, but not wet as overwatering can cause disease and wilting of the plant.
