Green Pony Tails or Stipa tenuissima ‘Pony Tails’ (Mexican grass ‘Pony Tails’)

Botanical name: Stipa tenuissima ‘Pony Tails’
This plant is a Hardy Perennial and is also known as Mexican grass ‘Pony Tails’, it belongs to the Genus Stipa. These plants form Arches and clumps of very fine and soft grass and together it looks like a wispy pony tail. It is a deciduous plant with Pale-green and Pale-brown color flowers. Its foliage is Gold in autumn whereas Green in summer. In general one can say the foliage is Grey-Green with purple tinge in color. The flowers bloom from summer to autumn. This plant can grow up to a height of 60cms that is 24 inches and can spread up to 30cms that is 12inches.
This plant needs Full Sun to partial shade to grow. It grows well in both exposed and sheltered environments and the soil needs to be well drained soil. It has an evergreen base clump of fine leaves. These fine leaves are topped with an array of flowering spikes, in summer. These leaves turn from silvery green to gold. The spikes are 2.5m (8ft). They have a very elegant pale feathery seed-heads which are above the foliage and can make a useful winter food source for finches and other seed-eating birds.
These can be used for indoor arrangements and can be used as rock plants and border plants. These are ornamental plants hence that can be used in winter when other garden plants have tough time. These plants add to color and texture to one’s garden.
The prime uses of the plant are in Architectural, Cottage/Informal Garden, and Drought resistant areas, Flower Arranging, Flowers Borders and Beds. This plant is a low maintenance plant.

Growing conditions of Green Pony tail grass

• Divide in March to April after the plant is established.
• It is easy to propagate by division.
• Divide in spring and not in autumn.
• Some divided plants may rot due to undeveloped root system. Discard them.
• Pony Tails can also be dried for secondary flowers in dried arrangements.
• This plant prefers Chalky, Clay, Loamy, Sandy (will tolerate most soil types).
• It needs Moist but well-drained soil.
• Its soil pH should be Acidic, Alkaline or Neutral (any of these will work well).
• It needs Full sun to grow well.
• Its a hardy plant that can grow in exposed and sheltered environments.
