Amaranthus: “Autumn Palette” (Botanical name: Amaranthus caudatus L.)




Amaranthus: “Autumn Palette” is a half-hardy annual flowering plant which grows up to a height of four feet that is 90-120cm (36-48 inches). They are native of American tropics. It is an attractive plant with its feathery and tall spikes. It comes in cream and biscuit shades. It flowers from summer to autumn. It is an ideal border plants and for rock gardens and on hanging caskets as a decorative plant. It can be used as a cut flower too. As a cut flower it can keep its color for long time.
It needs exposure to full sun for best growth. The other ranges of bloom colors are Coral/Apricot, Pale Yellow, and Cream/Tan. It has herbaceous foliage. The birds love the seed heads of this plant which are on the spikes which are tall and feathery. The soil pH requirements are 6.1 to 6.5 (mildly acidic), 6.6 to 7.5 (neutral), and 7.6 to 7.8 (mildly alkaline). The plant prefers damp soil so water the plants regularly but do not overwater.

Growing conditions for Amaranthus: “Autumn Palette”

• It needs exposure to full sun.
• Sow the seeds around February to March.
• Direct sow the seed after the lost frost.
• Sow into a well-drained and keep the soil damp.
• Add seed compost and add fine vermiculite to the soil.
• Sow the seeds on the surface itself.
• The seeds needs to be in a temperature of 20-25C (68-77F).
• The soil pH requirements are 6.1 to 6.5 (mildly acidic), 6.6 to 7.5 (neutral), and 7.6 to 7.8 (mildly alkaline)
• Allow the seeds to germinate at this temperature.
• Germination will take 3-15 days with the aid of light.
• Sow indoors around 6-8 weeks before last spring frost.
• These plants can be transplanted.
• Transplant them when they are almost 7.5 (3 inches) in height.
• Space them to about 30cm (12 inches) apart.

• Flowers are good for drying and preserving.

• Keep the plant away from frost.
• Do not over water to avoid disease and wilting.
• If seeds are required, let them dry on the plant itself and then remove them.
• Add seed compost and add fine vermiculite to the soil as and when required.
• Space them properly while transplanting otherwise they tend to overshadow each other.
