Fescue Grass Plants: characteristics, growing and planting conditions, care and its uses.

Festuca are a genus of hardy perennial ornamantel grasses. They have blue or green leaves. The fescues are a group of over 100 species of grasses. They were brought from Europe as a lawn and pasture grass. Fescues are “cool-season” grasses that grow best in the northern growing zones of the United States—and the transition zones if they are given enough shade.
Fescue plant is generally 0.5 to 1.2 m (1 1/2 to 4 feet) tall, with very fine thread-like leaves less than 1 mm wide, to tall grasses up to 2 m tall with large leaves up to 600 mm (2 ft) long and 20 mm (3/4 in.) broad.
– Fescue grass seed are also found in many seed blends.
– All of the fescue grass varieties are shade tolerance, staying green all year, and having very good drought resistance.
– Fescue grass fills a large gap in the grass field created by the climate differences that are not fully defined by zone.
– Fescue is intolerant to our hot, dry summer weather.

Growing Conditions for Fescue Grass

– Fescue grasses are shade tolerant and perform well in the areas where it is not too hot nor too cold.
– It grows best in soil that contains clay and adequate organic matter.
– Plant fescue seed from mid-February through mid-April or from mid-September through mid-November.
– Prepare your soil in early fall to provide adequate time for fescue to establish before winter.
– Remove all vegetation from the planting area.
– Rototill the top few inches of soil.
– Lightly sprinkle the sod to keep it slightly moist. When laying large amounts of fescue sod, keep sod in a shady area until ready for use.
– Keep the sod moist for the first two to three weeks.
– When outdoors, sow seeds on the surface in mass at about 25 to 50cm apart.
– Apply fertilizer to fescue grass two to three times per year.

Caring of Fescue Grass

Festuca requires regular watering and dividing every couple of years in the spring to maintain vigorous growth or to create new plants. The best way to get rid of weeds is to prevent them in the first place. Apply a crabgrass preventer between February 15 and March 15.
