Chocolate Daisy : Berlandiera lyrata, how to grow, soil conditions and benefits.

Berlandiera lyrata has bright yellow daisy-like bloom, this plant provides a definite chocolate scent all summer. Growing to 18 inches tall, Berlandiera sports silvery foliage and showy 2 inch yellow flowers that have red undersides.
The Chocolate Flowers does, indeed, smell like delicious chocolate. Gardeners often grow these along walkways where and below window sills. If you love the scent of chocolate, plant them in abundance.
These plants are amazingly easy to grow and care for. A good Xeric choice for a south facing set.
Chocolate flowers are low growing perennials with light green leaves. They will bloom from seed in the first year but increase in size dramatically in years two and three to large low mounding plants which can be over three feet across.

Flowers smell like chocolate! Plant them in groups and you can smell the flowers without bending down. Once blooming begins, new flowers open just before dawn, then lose their pedals by twilight. If you plan to dry the flowers, cut them before the seeds fall.

Growing Conditions

A full sun plant that thrives in poor soils and needs little water. great for those sunny locations where it’s hard to water. Some water will make them more vigorous and a few minutes from a soaker hose each day will create huge plants with mounds of flowers. The pH balance should be minimum of 6 and maximum of 8.
It is very easy to grow. Seeds can be sown at any time and will self-seed if given the chance. It will grow in containers, too, and are great for children’s gardens or for anyone who loves the taste and smell of chocolate.
